6 Singing Lies from TV’s Perfect Harmony

6 Singing Lies from TV’s Perfect Harmony

Singing

“The #1 reason you don’t already sing better” was on full display in this season’s new comedy Perfect Harmony.

And I can’t leave you NOT knowing what you should ignore.

So here they are.

EVERYONE asks me what I think of different singers on X-Factor, America’s Got Talent, etc.

And it’s usually a little disappointing when I tell them I don’t watch.

But it’s because i CAN’T watch.  (If you haven’t seen/listened to ‘My Story’ this is really weird to explain)

But because of my extremely ‘unique vocal ‘situation’ I have been left with EMPATHETIC VOICE SYNDROME.

When a singer does something unhealthy  or anything that keeps them from singing better,

I don’t just see it,

I don’t just hear it

I literally FEEL IT.

Not just that, but I watch so called ‘coaches’ dumping more problems on singers than they had when they got there.

Plus, it’s super frustrating to know that singers have no way to really understand what’s really happening.

So in theory, a sitcom about a community choir seemed relatively safe….

But then I thought about YOU watching this show.  And….I just can’t NOT tell you this.

Chances are you’ve heard all six of these bad singing tips before.

You’ve probably tried them all if you’re not still trying to do them all RIGHT NOW.

That’s because they’ve been AROUND longer than any other singing advice.  And unfortunately we’re still regurgitating them DECADES after science proved them wrong.

The TRUTH is that not a SINGLE one has ANY ANATOMICAL impact on making you sing better….in FACT…they create OBSTACLES to KEEP you from singing better in the first place.

Listen to this episode of The Voice Club Podcast to find out what they are….and what you should REALLY do with them.

What do you think?

Remember that singing dream you ‘got too old’ for?

Remember that singing dream you ‘got too old’ for?

Too old to be a singer? Think again.

I remember the first time I felt that ‘pang’ of “I’m getting too old to be a singer”.

This is embarrassing.

I was 23.

Not only was I way to young to think I was too old, I had already enjoyed almost a decade as a paid professional singer & I STILL thought that!

So if you’ve had it too…I’ve got a plan.

“YOU CAN’T…” IS THE LIE THAT CREEPS IN EARLY AND BURROWS IN TO STAY

If you’re a singer, chance are you’ve already shoved that dream clear to the back corner of your mind where dreams go to die.

Do You Have the ‘Singing Dream’?

When you’re younger you might have called it a “dream to be a famous singer”.

For those who dare to rise to start working on it, it comes to you as a dream to “take it to the next level”.  Ironically, this is the stage where many singers give up on their singing dream.

Some of you have dismissed that nagging desire to be a singer so long that you hardly notice it anymore.

But it’s still there, more recognizable as a regret then a dream

“If only I had….”

Why Is It Still There?

Isn’t it interesting that no matter how many years have passed, the dream to sing is still there?

Does it know something we don’t?

What is it waiting for us to do with it?

Having been there myself and having helped other singers navigate ‘the dream’, I offer you this:

The dream to be a singer is not unreachable for you.

Perhaps you’ve just been led away from it by believing the misconceptions about what being a singer really is.

It was possible all along.  And still is.

How Do You Make an Illusive Dream Come True?

Have you asked this question?  Most ‘singing dreamers’ never do.

I want you to know that if you have the dream to be a singer, it’s there for a reason.

There was not a small town on the prairie in the 1900’s or a small village in the corner of the world today where EVERYONE didn’t/doesn’t just SING…and love it.

You don’t have to BECOME a singer:

The act of getting out the and SINGING MAKES you one!

It has nothing to do with how old you are.

HOW TO RESTART THE DREAM

Right where you are.

Stop thinking about what you don’t like about your voice.  TODAY, start looking for what you DO like.

If your dream has been dead awhile, it might take some searching.  But having worked with singers at every age and level I can promise you, IT IS THERE.

NEXT:  Identify ONE thing that you’d like to improve.

You can’t go in 50 directions at once.  But you CAN go in one.  Choose one, and don’t change it until it moves to your ‘like’ list.

Now comes the most important part:

GET OUT THERE AND SING!

…notice I didn’t say ‘hire me’ (or anyone else) to train your butt off?

There is NO reason to train with ANYone until you recover that little spark you had when you dreamt of singing.

It’s part nerves (or terror), part anticipation and part giddy excitement.

THAT is the seed of the joy singing is meant to bring us.

Why do we WANT to sing?  Because it makes us feel HAPPY!

Singing literally changes so many things in the brain and the body that make us feel better.

As a severe chronic pain patient who has been on the heaviest pain meds known to modern man, I can tell you NONE of them comes close to the indescribably absence I have when I sing.

When we just allow ourselves to plug in somewhere…anywhere and just GET SINGING again, you can begin to get the INSTANT payoff that singing brings.

BUT if we fill our brain with doubts, fears, and everything else that killed the dream in the first place, the brain is literally interrupted from giving you JOY signals.

How do I get my confidence back?

Confidence comes from:

  1. Doing a thing until we’re comfortable, and,
  2. Improving our skill so we personally have less obstacles to enjoying it.

It’s the same for the open mic night karaoke singer as it is for the top touring singers in the world.

You can start getting comfortable again by simply singing wherever and whenever it best suits your life.

If your ‘dead dream’ brain still gets in your way, try something you’ve never done before that your brain will find it hard to judge you for based on lack of history:

  • community theater
  • community holiday choirs
  • church choirs
  • worship teams
  • open mic night at a jazz club
  • karaoke with your non-singing friends

Once you get STARTED again, you’ll be in a much better position to decide what kind of singing you want to do going forward:

  • Do you want to record a song for your family?
  • Do you want to record those songs you never took time to finish?
  • Do you want to support an artist by hosting an open house with live music by you? (One of our singers did this as a restart and had great success…and so did the artist!)
  • Do you want to find bands that perform locally or regionally?
  • Do you want to serve as a bigger part of your churches musical worship program?

Once you get singing again, the ideas will come.

What about vocal training?

You could spend your life in singing lessons and (depending on what you’re being taught and how) never regain the confidence to sing in front of people again.

That’s why I love to send people first to the ACT of singing.  Start the ball rolling again.  You’ll find that after that first initial ‘push’, it really wants to get rolling.

You also really don’t know where your voice is at NOW until you take if for a spin.

That allows YOU the information you need to decided what your first priority (your ONE THING) will be.

NEXT: Find some qualified training to get over your number one obstacle to the ‘joy’.

(side note: the reason I do this is because the only people I can tentatively recommend aren’t accessible by the majority of the people, so I cannot in good conscious tell you to just look up a local singing teacher.)

Check out the free resources we have available to help make you an informed consumer when it comes to your voice.

But just know….anything you think is unfixable is FIXABLE…anything you think is permanent that you don’t like…does NOT have to stay,

Just because you haven’t found someone who can show you how doesn’t mean your voice is incapable.

The level of TRAINING determines IF anything gets fixed, how FAST it get’s fixed and if you understand HOW it happened.

If there is any part of you that misses what singing used to mean to you….that’s your wakeup call.

Now you know what to do when you wake up!

So get out there and sing!
